¿Qué es Reactive Streams for the JVM?

Acaba de publicarse la especificación de Reactive Streams 1.0.0 for the JVM.

Esta especificación se ha creado con equipos de entre otros Netflix, Red Hat, Pivotal, Oracle y Typesafe y tiene el objetivo de deinfir un estándar para el paso de streams de datos entre hilos en un modo asíncrono y no bloqueante.
