Hudson/Jenkins: no todo es negativo

Seguro que habéis estado al tanto de la situación de Hudson después de la compra de Sun por parte de Oracle.

Resumiendo (interpretando) mucho:

Oracle tiene los derechos sobre la marca Hudson en Estados Unidos y la Unión Europea, basándose en el trabajo que el creador de Hudson: Kohsuke hizo mientras trabajaba para Sun. Así que Oracle ha obligado a Kohsuke a cambiar de nombre al proyecto (ahora se llama Jenkins)

Esta noticia ha creado muchas polémicas en muchos foros, como ejemplo podéis leer este hilo.

Mi opinión personal dista bastante de estar a favor de la opinión mayoritaria (me la reservo para alguna charla tomando una cerveza), lo que quería en este caso es verle la parte positiva:

Con la adquisición de Oracle de la marca Hudson y de su producto, Hudson estará dotado de un soporte comercial, como otros productos de integración continua, lo que hará que grandes clientes no desconfíen de este producto por ser una solución OpenSource y no soportada.

No es menos cierto que ya existían opciones de soporte comercial para Hudson, la mejor la de Sonatype que soportaba Maven + Hudson + Nexus:

    Considering that Oracle filed a trademark application only at the start of December when this became contentious, it’s clear that this isn’t Oracle «acquiring» the brand, it’s Oracle prying and grasping it away from the now Jenkins community, complete with threats of lawsuits.

    While it’s clear that Zyl is a skilled programmer and architect — and others have written as to his motivations to lesson the production/maintenance expense of his proprietary fork of Hudson, «Benson» by using Oracle’s willingness to invest manpower in the tail of this – for them — yet another public relations disaster — let’s not let that cloud the true situation:

    A free software community project and effort — and *brand* — has been hijacked through threats and bullying, and the vast majority of the developers have left. If one values the importance of these communities, one will shun Oracle and the newly revivified corpse, «Hudson», and let an object lesson stand as warning against these sorts of predacious, community-snubbing antisocial acts.

    Fortunately, it seems the great majority of the developers — and many of the users — have followed this affair and adopted my preferred course.
